Epson ColorWorks CW-D3800: Best for Affordable, Low-Volume Color Label Printing

The Epson ColorWorks CW-D3800 is the most accessible option in the lineup for businesses that want to begin printing attractive color labels or badges on demand without investing in a higher-capacity industrial system.
It uses dye-based CMYK ink to produce vibrant color on plain, matte, synthetic, glossy and wristband media. It supports roll media from 1 to 4.41 inches wide, offers a maximum print width of 4.25 inches and prints at speeds of up to 3.94 inches per second. Its compact footprint also makes it practical for reception areas, offices, retail counters and smaller production spaces.
The CW-D3800 is a strong choice for:
Visitor badges and event credentials
Custom or private-label products
Seasonal and promotional labels
Short-run retail labels
Low-volume product identification
Businesses prioritizing vivid color and affordability
The D3800 includes an automatic cutter, a color LCD screen, automatic nozzle verification and support for roll or fanfold media. Optional Wi-Fi connectivity also allows compatible mobile devices to print through the Epson ColorWorks Print app.
When another model may be better
Because the CW-D3800 uses dye ink, businesses producing labels for wet, chemically demanding or outdoor environments should generally consider one of Epson’s pigment-ink ColorWorks models instead. The D3800 is better positioned for indoor applications where affordability, vivid color and flexibility are more important than maximum environmental resistance.
Epson ColorWorks CW-C4000: Best Compact Commercial Label Printer

The Epson ColorWorks CW-C4000 occupies an important position in the lineup: it offers many commercial and enterprise-oriented features in a compact desktop design.
Like the D3800, it prints labels up to 4.25 inches wide at speeds of up to 3.94 inches per second. The major distinction is its use of Epson UltraChrome DL pigment ink, which is designed to produce durable labels with resistance to smudging and moisture. When used with qualifying media, the CW-C4000 can also produce labels that meet BS 5609 certification requirements.
The CW-C4000 is well suited for:
Food and beverage labels
Chemical and industrial product labels
Healthcare and laboratory identification
Retail product labels
Warehouse and inventory labels
Small manufacturers printing labels throughout the day
Businesses that need durable color labels but have limited space
The printer supports plain paper, matte paper, synthetic labels, gloss paper, gloss film and wristbands. It can also accommodate internal rolls, rear-fed fanfold media and external powered unwinders.
Gloss Black or Matte Black?
The CW-C4000 is offered in both Gloss Black and Matte Black configurations.
Choose the Gloss Black model when you primarily print on:
Gloss paper
Gloss film
Semi-gloss materials
High-gloss product labels
Choose the Matte Black model when you primarily print on:
Matte paper
Matte synthetic media
Textured paper
Uncoated stocks
Labels requiring especially dark black text on matte surfaces
The Matte Black configuration is not recommended for glossy media, so it is important to identify your primary label material before selecting the printer.
Why choose the CW-C4000 instead of the D3800?
The CW-C4000 is generally the better option when durability, water resistance, regulatory labeling or outdoor exposure are meaningful considerations. The D3800 may be more appropriate for lower-volume indoor labels where vivid dye-based color and a lower entry point are the priorities.
Epson ColorWorks CW-C6000 Series: Best for Industrial and Enterprise Workflows
*C6000 featured left, the C6500 featured right.
The Epson ColorWorks CW-C6000 Series is designed for more demanding commercial, industrial and enterprise environments. These printers were developed as color alternatives to traditional black-and-white thermal-transfer printers, offering comparable workflow features while adding full-color graphics, photographs, warnings and variable data.
The series includes four primary configurations:
CW-C6000A: Four-inch model with automatic cutter
CW-C6000P: Four-inch model with peel-and-present
CW-C6500A: Eight-inch model with automatic cutter
CW-C6500P: Eight-inch model with peel-and-present
All four use durable UltraChrome DL pigment ink and can produce resolution up to 1200 × 1200 dpi. They also support ZPL II, ESC/Label, SAP, Windows, macOS and Linux workflows.
CW-C6000 or CW-C6500: Which Width Do You Need?
The most immediate decision is label width.
Choose the CW-C6000 when:
Your labels are no more than approximately four inches wide
You print shipping labels, product labels, compliance labels or carton labels
You want industrial workflow capabilities without the footprint of an eight-inch printer
Your current thermal-transfer workflow already uses four-inch media
The C6000 models support media up to 4.4 inches wide and a maximum print width of 4.25 inches.
Choose the CW-C6500 when:
Your labels exceed four inches in width
You print large product, drum, carton, chemical or horticultural labels
You need room for extensive safety information, branding or multilingual content
You want the flexibility to print both narrow and wide formats on one system
The C6500 models support media up to 8.5 inches wide and a maximum print width of 8.34 inches.
The CW-C6500’s wider format can also support specialized applications. In an Epson case study, WestHort worked with a modified CW-C6500A to print thick horticultural stakes and tags containing photographs, text, barcodes and color graphics. The application required labels that could withstand exposure to sun, dirt and water while remaining readable throughout the product lifecycle.
That example demonstrates why media testing is so important. Specialized materials, unusually thick stocks or nonstandard shapes may require modification or validation before purchase.
Auto Cutter or Peel-and-Present?
Once you select the correct width, the next question is how the labels will be used.
Choose an “A” Auto Cutter model when:
You print batches or groups of labels
Labels will be removed from the liner later
You use continuous media or variable-length labels
You want the printer to cut between jobs
Operators need finished strips or individually cut labels
T
he automatic cutter helps separate jobs and can reduce the need to stock multiple preprinted label formats.
Choose a “P” Peel-and-Present model when:
An operator applies labels one at a time
You want each label automatically separated from its liner
You are trying to speed up manual label application
The printer will be connected to an automated applicator
You require an applicator I/O interface
With peel-and-present, a label-taking sensor prevents the next label from printing until the previous label is removed. This makes the P models particularly useful for production lines, packing stations and automated print-and-apply workflows.
Why the CW-C6000 Series Works Well for Enterprise Operations

The C6000 Series includes features that may be unnecessary for a small retail user but essential in manufacturing, logistics or regulated environments.
These include:
Direct ZPL II compatibility
General-purpose I/O connectivity
Remote fleet monitoring
Supply, fault and readiness reporting
Firmware deployment tools
Support for SAP and major middleware
Rear fanfold and external media feeding
Gloss Black and Matte Black configurations
BS 5609-certified label combinations
The general-purpose I/O port allows the printer to communicate status information and receive commands to print, pause or clean, helping integrate the printer into automated workflows.
For businesses replacing thermal-transfer printers, ZPL II compatibility may allow existing label formats to be used with less workflow reprogramming. Color can then be added through Epson’s ESC/Label extensions for elements such as product photos, warning fields, logos and color-coded information.
Epson ColorWorks CW-C8000: Best for High-Volume and High-Speed Production
The Epson ColorWorks CW-C8000 is the clear choice when production speed and ink capacity are the primary considerations.
It prints at speeds of up to 11.8 inches per second while maintaining a resolution of 600 × 1200 dpi. That makes it significantly faster than the D3800, C4000 and C6000 Series for high-volume batch production.
The CW-C8000 is designed for:
Large production batches
High-volume variable-data labels
Manufacturing operations
Distribution and logistics facilities
Food and beverage production
Chemical and industrial labeling
Businesses looking to reduce operator intervention
Organizations managing multiple printers across different locations
One of the C8000’s most important differences is its ink capacity. It uses four individual 480 mL ink packs, providing a total ink capacity of approximately 1.9 liters. This is intended to reduce interruptions, lower consumable waste and support a lower cost per milliliter in production environments.
The printer supports media up to 4.4 inches wide, labels up to 40 inches long and media thicknesses up to 0.6 mm. It also includes an automatic cutter and supports an optional take-up unit for roll-to-roll production.
Choose the CW-C8000 when:
The majority of your labels are four inches wide or less
Your production volume is too high for a cartridge-based desktop printer
Print speed directly affects operational productivity
You want fewer ink changes and less operator intervention
You need remote monitoring through Epson Cloud Solution PORT
You print long batch runs with variable information
When the C6000 Series may be better
The C8000 does not replace every C6000 Series configuration. Choose the C6000 Series instead when you need:
Labels wider than four inches
Peel-and-present functionality
A smaller industrial system
Individual label application rather than high-speed batch production
The choice between the C8000 and C6000 Series is therefore less about which printer is “better” and more about whether your workflow prioritizes speed and capacity, label width, or label dispensing method.

Other Factors to Consider Before Purchasing
1. Label material
Your media determines whether you should select Gloss Black, Matte Black or dye ink. Selecting the wrong ink configuration can limit print quality or media compatibility.
2. Environmental exposure
Consider whether the label will encounter:
Moisture
Chemicals
Abrasion
Refrigeration or condensation
Sunlight
Dirt
Outdoor exposure
For demanding environments, the printer, ink and label material must be evaluated as a complete system.
3. Print volume
A lower-priced printer may not be the most economical choice when printing thousands of labels per day. Ink capacity, maintenance requirements and operator intervention can have a greater effect on long-term cost than the initial purchase price.
4. Workflow integration
Businesses using ZPL, SAP, middleware, automated applicators or centralized printer management should confirm compatibility before selecting a model.
5. Media dimensions and construction
Width is only one consideration. Roll diameter, core size, liner, gap position, black marks, label length, material thickness and die-cut construction can all affect compatibility.
6. Future growth
Selecting a printer based only on today’s volume may lead to another equipment purchase sooner than expected. Consider anticipated growth, additional product lines and the possibility of bringing more outsourced label production in-house.
